Why do pilots read checklists out loud?

Shouldn't experienced pilots just know what to do?

Checklists catch the things that experienced people can skip when they are busy. Pilots use them at set points of the flight and for rare events, reading items out loud and confirming them.

Crew resource management builds on this: one pilot flies while the other monitors. They speak up, challenge and check. Everyone is expected to say if something looks wrong, regardless of rank.

A little deeper

CRM grew out of accident investigations that showed human factors, not just machinery, were central. It is now part of training across aviation.

Procedures vary by airline and aircraft type.
